Rosa Maria found out she had HIV while she was pregnant with her first child. Because she was afraid of being rejected by her family and friends, Rosa Maria never told them about her life-threatening condition. When she gave birth and learned that her baby was also HIV-positive, Rosa Maria almost gave up hope on life.
But looking over at her newborn son, Rosa Maria realized that she needed to get help at least for his sake. So she turned to Malteser International for support -- a decision that changed their lives and that of her family forever.
Through our “Save a Child from AIDS” program, Rosa found a new family that made her feel supported. In collaboration with Order of Malta Mexico, our program helps mothers like Rosa protect their babies from pregnancy until 2 years of age so that they don’t become infected with the HIV virus.
Thanks to our program, Rosa followed her antiretroviral treatment and didn't transmit the infection to her youngest son, Hugo.
With the right support, children like Hugo can grow up free of HIV and lead healthy lives with dignity! Our program helps HIV-infected mothers and their children by providing them with regular medical check-ups and free medication, nutritional support, psychological support and counseling. We also teach these mothers micro-business skills using local products to help them become self-sufficient and supplement their family’s income.
